Despite being no express workers, some GWR Pannier Tank locomotives were able to achieve up to 500,000 miles during their operational lifetime, and multiple examples were some of the last steam locomotives to still be in active service with the National Coal Board, as well as London Transport. The 5700s bought by London Transport between 1956 and 1963 were repainted in the standard LT maroon livery with yellow and black lining. Those bought by NCB were painted in a light green. GWR Pannier Tanks are an iconic class and for many, ourselves included, they are the first steam train that we fell in love with as children through television, preserved lines or model railways. This pack contains all of the 54xx series of engines, including the 5400, 6400 and London Transport later painted their Panniers in a splendid red livery with gold lettering. Due to their usefulness and the fact that many Panniers lasted well into to the 1970’s under private ownership, no fewer than 16 members have survived in various forms of preservation. The GWR 0-6-0PT (Pannier Tank), is a type of steam locomotive built by the British Great Western Railway with the water tanks carried on both sides of the boiler, in the manner of panniers. They were used for local, suburban and branch line passenger and goods traffic, for shunting duties, and as banker engines on inclines.

Additionally, we have an extensive range of models available and we particularly specialise in London Transport model tube train kits. Based in Poulner, Hampshire, our models are available to all of the general public. In 1932, 8700 was rebuilt with condensing apparatus, a Weir fitted pump and shorter pannier tanks. This was to allow the locomotives to work over the London Transport Metropolitan Line to Smithfield. After trials with 8700, 9701-9710 were built in 1933 to a slightly modified design.
